Breastfeeding : the best for your baby

From birth up to 6 months old, your baby only needs you for feeding: your milk and nothing but your milk is the best food to help them grow, because it contains absolutely everything they need. Discover the miracle of your milk for peace of mind when breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding begins with colostrum

What is colostrum? It is the very first milk you give your baby when you place them on your breast for the first time after birth. This first milk is a concentrated miracle! High in protein, minerals and vitamins, as well as antibodies to get your baby’s immune defences going1, it also kick-starts their digestive system. It’s the best, and it’s you who provides it: well done!

Why exclusive breastfeeding and nothing else?

Your milk is 88% water! This is why, up until the age of 6 months, your baby doesn’t need anything else to eat or drink, not even water, as they get everything through breastfeeding. A mother’s body is amazing: by producing milk for your baby, you are protecting them against illness and infection. And, depending on your diet, baby is already discovering new flavours little by little. It is the best thing for their health and the best thing for introducing them to new flavours!

Comfortable breastfeeding for you and your baby

Choose a position that suits you and that allows baby to latch onto your breast easily.

You can sit down with your baby’s head in the crook of your elbow, your belly and theirs touching.

Lying down on your side, with baby’s head nestled into your shoulder, is also nice.

The most important thing is that you are comfortable, because your baby will therefore be comfortable as well. If you are in any doubt, other women you know, for instance your midwife, will no doubt be able to give you some good advice. In any case, don’t worry and trust in yourself. Breastfeeding is new to you, it sometimes takes a little time to feel good and come into your own, and that’s natural. As you breastfeed more and more, you will find the best position and the best rhythm for your baby, and for you.

And last but not least, you must never blame yourself if you struggle to breastfeed. This happens to a lot of women. Don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor or midwife, if you have one, if you are having problems, and remember that the most important thing you can give your baby is your love!

Breast milk is the ideal food for infants. WHO recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first 6 months and then continuation thereof until the age of 2 alongside the introduction, from 6 months, of safe and appropriate complementary foods. Please consult a healthcare professional if you need any advice about feeding your baby.
